Abstract
497,701. Spools. STEVENS, A. H. (General Ribbon Mills, Inc.) March 15, 1938, No. 8030. [Class 120 (iii)] A spool for ribbons, tapes and the like is made from a blank of sheet material of general circular shape as shown in Fig. 2. It is scored along the lines 20 to permit bending and has a central opening 14 of octagonal outline formed by the inner edges 16 of rectangular sections 18. Each pair of lines 20 forms the angle of a sector 24 the periphery 22 of which projects beyond the outer edges 19 of the sections 18. The blank is folded to produce the spool shown in Fig. 1, the end faces being formed by the sectors 24 alternately while the sections 18 form the axial part. The ribbons may be wound directly on the spool, or a band of paper may be secured to the spool first, or the ribbon and a protective paper strip may be wound together. The winding is retained by the flanges formed by the projecting parts of the sectors 24. The ribbon may be wound into a roll upon a temporary carrier, from which it is taken and placed on the spool. A cylindrical block 40 is then inserted between the edges 16 at the centre of the spool to cause an expansion of the structure so that the projecting flanges overlap the roll.
