Abstract

1,044,151. Liquid fuel fired furnaces; nozzles. G.K.N. STEEL CO. Ltd. July 1, 1963 [April 14, 1962], No.14505/62. Heading F4B. A furnace is provided with one or more burners 12, each burner including a plurality of oxygen discharge passages 20, a liquid fuel supply pipe 16 discharging into said oxygen discharge passages at a position spaced inwardly from the burner orifices thereof, and valve means in each burner for closing the pipe 16. Each burner comprises an oxygen supply passage 15 and the fuel supply pipe 16 which is centrally disposed in the passage 15. The fuel supply pipe is provided at its discharge end with a nozzle member 18 having a number of symmetrically spaced fuel discharge passages 19 diverging from the longitudinal axis of pipe 16 at an angle of about 30 degrees. Each passage 19 extends within a similarly diverging oxygen discharge passage 20 and terminates at approximately one inch from the outlet thereof. The fuel supply pipe 16 is provided with two spring- loaded non-return valves 23 and 25 which automatically close when the pressure in the fuel supply pipe is less than 6 to 20 lb. per square inch above the surrounding oxygen pressure. Surrounding the oxygen supply passage 15 are water cooling passages 28, 29. The liquid fuel may be oil, tar or pitch creosote. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the fuel supply pipe has no nozzle member 18, but instead branches directly into fuel discharge passages 19. The fuel discharge passages 19 may discharge fuel through the side walls of the oxygen discharge passages.
