Abstract

1,039,751. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus. SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE. April 5, 1963 [Jan. 15, 1962], No. 1479/62. Heading F1P. [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A piston and cylinder 39, 41, Fig. 3 actuated penumatically through a passage 35, Fig. 1 (not shown) has its movement damped by hydraulic fluid trapped within the cylinder 39 and which is controllably released through a variable aperture formed by a groove 48 in the piston rod 42. The piston rod is guided through a bearing 47 and the depth of the groove is reduced at each end of the stroke to reduce the speed of movement. A non-return valve 51 in the bearing 47 permits ready return of the piston. An expansion chamber 49 for the fluid is provided in the outer casing 40 and may contain a floating piston 50. The apparatus is used to move a carriage 2, Fig. 1 (not shown) over a limited distance and carries at least one wheel 43, over which an elongated flexible member 44 fixed at one end is passed and is connected at the other end to the carriage. Apparatus is also described for automatically opening a split protection housing 1 enclosing apparatus supported by the carriage 2, valve means preventing movement of the carriage before the housing 1 is fully opened.
