Abstract

882,282. Hydraulic shock absorbers. CREED & CO. Ltd. Sept. 2, 1960, No. 30367/60. Class 108(3). A shock absorbing device 1 comprises a cylinder 2 containing hydraulic medium with its ends interconnected by a passage 3 in which is a non-return valve 5, a plunger 8 movable in one direction under the influence of a mass 22, a piston 20 coaxially surrounding the plunger and incorporating a number of paths for the passage of hydraulic medium, first spring means 21 between a flange 10 on the plunger and the end of the piston 20 and second spring means 16 for returning the plunger when the mass 22 is withdrawn. In the construction the paths through the piston are defined by a series of radial fins 19 the ends of which are covered by an enlarged portion 11 of the plunger which extends into a recess 12 in the casing of the device. In operation the plunger is pushed to the right by the mass 22 taking piston 20 with it until the hydraulic pressure on the right-hand end of the piston overcomes the pressure of spring 21 causing an annular gap 18 to appear between the piston and plunger through which the medium passes into the passages in the piston and thence into the left-hand end of the cylinder retarding the motion of the mass. On removal or withdrawal of the mass spring 16, which surrounds adjustable stop 15, pushes the plunger and piston to the left, hydraulic medium passing from the left-hand to righthand end of the cylinder through passage 3 and valve 5. Passage 4 is provided for maintaining the level of hydraulic medium in the system.
