Abstract

Energy is absorbed by rivets (9) being successively sheared by relative movement between two components, for example a piston (6, 7, 8) and a cylinder (5). The rivets can be on the piston or the cylinder, or on a rotating disc, or between plates. The rivets can be arranged in curves of constant or varying gradient, or can be of variable size or diameter. The energy can be transmitted from a number of devices, the detecting element (1, 2, 3) having a different diameter from that of the piston which cuts the rivets.
