Abstract
1382674 Shock absorbers; deformable energyabsorbing devices M CASCIOLA 24 Feb 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 8710/72 Headings F2S and F2E In a shock absorber comprising a rod 2 moving in a housing 1, the medium 3 is a solid deformable material (e.g. lead, an alloy, or a plastics material) and the rod 2 has axially extending ridges 6 which project radially into the deformable material 3 to cut through and deform it on relative movement of the rod 2 and the housing 1. There are four ridges 6, which may be tapered. The shock absorber may be arranged for tensile loads (Fig. 1, not shown) instead of compressive loads. The deformability of the medium 3 may vary along the length of the housing.
