Abstract
1,038,862. Electromagnetic relays. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 7, 1962 [Nov. 8, 1961], No. 39981/61. Heading H2B. The armature 6 of a polarized relay is biased against an adjustable spring stop 12 by a spring 11 and carries a contact blade 13, 14 which co-operates with a fixed contact blade 15, 16 provided with an adjustable back stop 20. During attraction of the armature 6 it is subjected to a spring bias which increases in steps. Initially armature 6 moves against spring 11 alone, then against the combined bias of spring 11 and contact blade 15, 16, the bias of blade 15, 16 being increased when it abuts the adjustable stop 20. The relay may be adjusted so that it is held closed by the flux of a permanent magnet 1 or released by the spring bias when coil 5 is de-energized. If the relay is retained closed by the permanent magnet it may be released manually, mechanically or by reverse excitation of the coil. An adjustable residual screw 10 co-operates with the armature. The coil 4 may be replaced by two coils energized by currents of opposite polarity so that the relay responds to the net effect of two or more signals. The contact springs are adjustable.
