Abstract
1,117,010. Magnetically latchable relays. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 4 Oct., 1965 [16 Dec., 1964], No. 41928/65. Heading H2H The magnetic core 10 of an attracted armature type relay is provided with latching and unlatching coils 46, 50 respectively controlled by circuits 44, 48 energizable from a D.C. or A.C. supply. Upon closure of switch 56 the capacitor 54 passes a high initial current to close contacts 18, 20, the current falling to a low steady state value should switch 56 remain closed for an extended period. When switch 56 is opened, the contacts 18, 20 remain closed through the residual flux in members 10, 12, and capacitor 54 discharges through a resistor 58. To open contacts 18, 20, a switch 64 is closed and coil 50 is energized to reduce the residual flux and so allow a spring 22 to open the armature 12. The magnetic materials are conventional and are chosen so that the core 10 has a low coercive force relative to the armature 12, the material of which is heated, quenched and tempered in a particular way described in the specification. Diodes 52, 60 prevent undesirable voltages being induced in circuits 44, 48. Capacitor 54 may be replaced by a miniature incandescent lamp.
