Abstract

An apparatus for closuring filled thermoplastics containers and for creating a positive pressure therein so as to prevent panelling comprises a support member 1 vertically movable relative to a pad 6, and a sealing head 27. The support member and sealing head are movable about a central column 28. In operation a roller 17 engaging a raised portion of cam 18 causes the support member with a container thereon to be moved upwardly. During the upward movement a suction is applied to the container bottom (Fig. 8, not shown), and a sealing disc 37 having a heat sealable coating is positioned over the mouth of the container. The container mouth is then introduced into the sealing head and is sealed. Upon lowering the container and support member the suction remains applied to the container bottom. After a cooling period the suction is released. The application of the suction or vacuum is controlled by two bores 10, 14 in relatively movable amounts 11, 13 respectively. A vacuum is applied to the fixed annulus 13 by pump 16 and is applied via bore 10, when the bores 10, 14 are in register, and further bores 9, 8 to the container bottom. The annulus 11 rotates about column 28 together with the support member. The sealing head comprises a heated annular plate 25 movable within housing 26 against the action of a spring 29. Should the apparatus be stopped while a container is in the closuring position (Fig. 9, not shown) the cam 18 is pivoted about pin 20 by a pneumatic cylinder 24 to a position in which the container is lowered out of relation with the sealing head. The apparatus may also include an output star-wheel having cooling fingers associated therewith, which fingers are pressed into engagement with the top of the sealed containers (Fig. 11, not shown). The apparatus may be used with a sealing head arranged to apply screw caps to containers. The sealing head can be adapted to receive containers of different heights.
