Abstract

1434428 Container closure apparatus EISENWERKE KAISERSLAUTERN GmbH 7 Dec 1973 [9 Dec 1972] 56834/73 Heading F2P An apparatus which enables the cover 1 of an enamelled vessel 3 having a flange 21 to be rapidly closed or removed comprises a piston/ cylinder device 16 which acts between a cover support plate 4 and a fixed reaction point on an arm 15 above the centre of the vessel to press the cover against the vessel; a multiplicity of clamping members 5 capable of engaging the underside of the flange 21 and of exerting a clamping force towards the cover; piston/ cylinder devices 6 associated with each clamping member to exert the clamping force and which are pivoted at 8 on an extension 7 of the support plate 4; levers 10 pivotably connected at one end 9 to the piston/cylinder devices 6 and pivoted at 11 on extension 7 have the other end 12 guided by a guideway 13 in a fixed member 14. In operation, from the closed position shown, clamping members 5 are released by piston/ cylinder device 6 and the cover raised by piston/cylinder device 16. As the cover is raised the clamping members 5 are pivoted outwards by the action of levers 10 in conjunction with guideways 13 so that they clear the flange 21 (Fig. 2, not shown). To close the vessel the sequence is reversed. A swivel column 17 carries the arm 15 to which the cover and the rest of the apparatus is connected. The apparatus may be protected by a hood 19 suspended from arm 15. Inside the hood a spray device 20 may be arranged to clean the joint surfaces before closing the container.
