Abstract

1478194 Conveying workpieces through fluidized bed DART INDUSTRIES Inc 5 June 1974 [28 June 1973] 25021/74 Heading B2L A clamping mechanism for immersing a heated object, e.g. a bottle 128, into a fluidized bed 138, and adapted to grasp such object in response to a predetermined signal comprises an enclosure (not shown) having a bottom wall with an opening therein, actuator means and a movable linkage both mounted inside said enclosure, said actuator being rigidly fixed thereto, and split clamp jaw members 118, 120, connected to said linkage for movement toward and away from one another, the lower portion of said members extending through said opening, said members defining a recess 126 for engagement with one end of said object and having a means 132 for conveying a fluid medium to said recess whereby said recess can be positively pressurised during immersion of said object. Horizontally extending shields 138 may cover said opening in said bottom wall when the jaw halves are together; the fluid, e.g. air, passing through tubes 132 serves to prevent solid from the fluidized bed from entering the bottle 128 or fouling the clamping means. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates a plant wherein bottles are uncased, preheated sprayed with primer, preheated for coating, carried by a conveyor to a location where they are aligned, grasped by clamps as above described, immersed in a fluid bed of polymer to give them a shatter-resistant coating, retrieved from the bed and released by said clamps, on to a conveyor which carries them to a curing oven, cooling region, waxer, sensitizer, and inspection and packing station. Reference is made to Specification 1429061, which describes a similar coating plant.
