Abstract
1354400 Coating pipes METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 25 Oct 1971 [24 Oct 1970 3 Dec 1970 4 Sept 1971(2)] 49520/71 Headings B2E and B2L The internal surface of a pipe 1 is coated with powdered plastics material by passing a current of air charged with the powder through the pipe whilst heating the pipe by means of an induction coil 2 and subsequently passing a current of air free from powder through the pipe. Relative movement between the induction coil is caused either by movement of the coil or movement of the pipe. As shown in Fig. 2 powder from a metering device 8 is blown by a fan 9 through a flexible tube 30 to the inside of pipe 1 and thence through a cooler 18 back to the device 8. The pipe, mounted on a carriage 32 is moved relative to an induction heating coil 2. When sufficient powder has passed through the pipe 1, this being determined by movement limit switches 16, 17 valves 12-15 are operated so that powder is by-passed around the tube 19 and the fan 11 blows clean air through the tube 30 and thence through the pipe 1. Any excess powder remaining in the system is collected by means of a cyclone 10. The induction coil is operated during the smoothing operation whilst the powder free air is circulated. Additional external cooling sprays 33, 34 can be provided to cool the pipe 1 adjacent the heating coil 2. Fig. 4 shows a further embodiment in which the pipe 1 to be coated is mounted in a fixed position and a valve 12 is used to allow either powder laden air from pipe 6 or powder free air from pipe 7 to pass through the pipe 1. In this embodiment the outside of the pipe is also coated by immersion in a fluidised bed of powder 24 which, with the induction heating coil 2, moves relative to the pipe 1. Other embodiments are described which show different arrangements of valves and pipe systems. Any suitable plastics material may be used for the coating operation. The pipe to be coated is of mild steel and may be coated with polyundecamide powder, polyethylene powder, polyamides, polyolefins, polyvinyl comounds phenolic resins, polyesters, polyepoxides or butadiene-styrene polymers.
