Abstract

1358946 Making aerosol containers; seaming ALUMINIUM SUISSE SA 15 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 22675/72 Headings B3A B3J and B3Q A cap 3, 4 is secured to the edge 2 of a container 1 by pressing against the base 3 of the cap to engage its flange 5 against a sealing gasket 6 on the edge 2 and simultaneously expanding the skirt 4 to form an annular bulge. The downward pressure on the base tends to raise the flange resiliently about A-A, thus increasing the gripping action after seaming when the downward pressure is released. As shown, the method is applied to seaming the valve-cap on an aerosol can. Radially-expansible jaws 7 for expanding the skirt and, through a block 8, pressing against the base 3 rise during the expansion operation. In various modifications, the block may be magnetized (Fig. 2), extend inwardly for operation by a piston, or be formed of non-magnetic material and suspended by a spring (17, Fig. 3) from a control mandrel or piston. It may also be formed of rubber (Fig. 4) containing magnetized particles and coated with a non-magnetic layer (19), or be formed by integral extensions of the jaws (Fig. 5).
