Abstract

1,025,659. Suction cleaning apparatus. R. E. COX. March 10, 1965 [Dec. 10, 1963], No. 48660/63. Heading A4F. A passenger vehicle, such as an underground railway carriage, having two pairs of longitudinally spaced laterally opposite door openings 11 (Fig. 1, not shown) is cleaned by moving it slowly between a pair of suction ducts 13, 14 spaced from each other longitudinally of the vehicle, and each of which is adapted to seal a door opening 11 when aligned therewith, a screen 18 adapted to close substantially an opening 11 being associated with each duct 13, 14, one screen 18 being forward and the other rearward of its associated duct 13 or 14. The arrangement of the screens 18 is such that when a forward opening 11 is aligned with a duct 15 the opposite forward opening 11 is substantially closed by a screen 18, and the two rearward openings 11 are uncovered so that air will be drawn through the latter to carry dust and rubbish to the forward suction duct 13 (in which is a suction fan). As the carriage advances the forward openings 11 will be gradually uncovered and the rearward pair covered so that the suction duct 14 becomes effective and the major part of the air flow will enter the forward openings 11. To assist the movement of dust and rubbish additional air streams may be admitted to the carriage through a slot at the lower end of each screen 18 and apertures in the carriage sides having inwardly opening closures.
