Abstract

986,542. Ventilating vehicles. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Nov. 16, 1962 [Nov. 18, 1961], No. 43484/62. Heading F4V. [Also in Division B7] A motor vehicle ventilating arrangement comprises an air gap adjacent an edge of a fixed window and extending parallel to the window, resilient sealing means adapted to close the gap, and means for operating the sealing means. As illustrated in Fig. 1 the gap 4 between the lower edge 2 of a windscreen 1 and a portion 3 of the bodywork is provided with an elastic tubular strip 11 containing a wire or cable 14 which may be tightened or slackened to close or open the gap 4. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the elastic strip is V-shaped in cross-section. As shown in Fig. 4 a substantially U-section strip 41 is fastened to a shoulder 6 of a body panel 3 and is pushed against or withdrawn from the windscreen 1 by a thrust member 47. When the gap is open, entering air as shown by the line 45 is deflected through more than 90 degrees to separate dust and water. As illustrated in Fig. 9, the lower edge 2 of the windscreen 1 is embedded in a sealing strip 120 having a depending strip 110 in the lip of which is embedded a wire or cable 121 which may be tightened or slackened, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), to close or open an air flow gap 81. Air flowing through this gap is deflected through more than 90 degrees to deposit dust and water. The gap extends the full width of the windscreen so that in the centre air enters the vehicle by the pressure due to its motion and is withdrawn at the sides by the suction due to its motion. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the sealing strip is fixed to a flange of the bodywork and a tip of an extension of this strip contains a wire by which it may be pushed against or withdrawn from the windscreen. In further embodiments, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), hollow resilient strips are attached to the bodywork and may be expanded against the windscreen by pressure oil or compressed air to close the air gap or allowed to collapse to open it. The various sealing strips may be formed so that in the normal state they tend to open or close the air gap. The above arrangements may be used on any number of sides of any of the vehicle windows and the air gap may be provided between a window and columns beside the window inclined to the plane of the latter.
