Description
"AN ASSEMBLY OF A SHEET OF GLASS AND Rlf; SEALI,' #EMBER FOR MOTOR VEHICLES"
> < > < > < > <
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to windows for motor vehicles and in particular refers to an assembly comprising a transparent sheet of glass and a sealing member of plastic material intimately bonded thereto, provided with a plurality of devices by means of which the assembly can serve auxiliary purposes in addition to the principal one of being a transparent closure for an opening of the motor vehicle frame.
In recent years the motor vehicle manufacturers have requested their contractors to supply increasingly complex components, enabling the carrying out of various functions, resulting in a reduction of the assembly time and therefore the final cost of the motor vehicle.
Usually this type of pre-assembled and polifunctional element to be mounted on a manufacturing line by means of few and simple operations, is indicated by the term "macrocomponent".
In the field of motor vehicle windows a well knawn macrocomponent is an assembly comprising a transparant sheet of glass and a sealing member of plastic material intimately bonded thereto, which is assembled directly by the manufacturer of the window.
Such product is well known to those skilled in the art, as are the processes for its manufacturing.
It is also known that, in the case of windows such as a front or a rear windscreen, the market requires auxiliary services in addition to the basic one of separating the inside and outside of the motor vehicle.
As an example, in the case of a front windscreen the function of supporting the shaft of the windscreen wiper and/ or supporting the rear view mirror can be required.
In the case of a rear windscreen a still greater number of auxiliary functions can be required, such as to support the brake lights, to support the shaft of the windscreen wiper, to support the nozzle for the windscreen cleaning liquid, and so on.
Up to now all such functions were carried out by means of special supports, mounted on the glass or the motor vehicle frame by individual and separate operations, or, in the case of the windscreen wiper system, by providing a hole in the glass.
Moreover, as most of the auxiliary devices need an electric feed, along the edge of the sheet of glass a disorderly system of electric cables was arranged.
This cable system raised problems both on mounting the auxiliary devices and on connecting the electric plant of the motor vehicle.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome the above mentioned drawbacks by providing an assembly of a sheet of glass and sealing member which combines operating features and convenience of use at a low cost.
According to the present invention this object is fulfilled by an assembly of a sheet of transparent material and a sealing member of moulded plastic material intimately bonded along the rim of the sheet for a motor vehicle windscreen, characterized in that said sealing member is provided with a plurality of devices for supporting and serving a plurality of auxiliary systems.
The auxiliary systems are thus housed in the sealing member and obtained with the same moulding operation as the sealing member itself.
The use of an assembly of this type provides the following advantages:
the bases of the support brackets for the brake lights can be embedded directly into the plastic material forming the sealing member; the electric cables and the pipe for feeding the windscreen cleaning liquid are housed in a channel formed in the sealing member itself; the shaft of the windscreen wiper passes through a hole made in the sealing member, with a local reinforcement, rather than through a conventional hole made in the glass.
A further advantage of the present invention is that the manufacturer of the macrocomponent glass-seal assembly, can provide the macrocomponent with the desired devices by the sole operation of moulding the sealing member.
As an example, in the case of a heated rear windscreen for motor vehicle, with the same operation of moulding and applying the sealing member, the manufacturer can simultaneously mould the brackets for supporting the brake lights, the channel for housing the electric cables and the pipe for the water of the windscreen wiper, the hole for supporting the nozzle for the pipe and the hole for supporting the windscreen wiper shaft.
Consequently a considerable decrease of cost can be obtained in the final product and at the same time a considerable convenience of use of the above described assembly on the manufacturing line.
Further features and advantages of the invention will become clear from the following specification, given as a non limitative example and referred to the accompanying drawings, in which:
figure 1 is a plan view of a glass-sealing member assembly according to the present invention;
figure 2 is a vertical cross-section along line A
A of the assembly shown in figure 1; and
figure 3 is a vertical cross-section along line B
B of the assembly shown in figure 1.
Referring to figures 1 to 3, the glass-sealing member assembly according to the present invention comprises a sheet of tempered glass (1) and a sealing member (2t of plastic material intimately bonded to the sheet about the rim (3) thereof.
The sheet of glass (1.) is particularly suited to be used as a rear windscreen in a motor vehicle.
HorizontaL parallel conductor wires (16) are provided for de-fogging the glass during the winter season.- The wires can be applied by means of any known method.
The sealing member (2), on the side facing inwards into the motor vehicle, has the form of a channel (4) defined with beads (5) and (6), produced in the same moulding operation as the sealing member itself. The channel (4) runs all around the rim of the glass (1) and it has the function of containing the electric feed cables (7) and the pipe (7') for feeding water to the windscreen wiper.
In figure 1 the inner edge and the outer edge of the sealing member (2) are indicated in (19) and (20) respectively.
Embedded into the sealing member (2) during the moulding operation are the bases of brackets (8) for supporting the brake lights (9).
Referring to figure 3, the vertical cross-section along line B-B passes through the center of a hole (10) supporting a shaft (11) of the windscreen wiper (12).
In this area the glass (1) is provided with a recess (13) serving the purpose of making easier a substitution of the sealing member on the glass. According to the invention, the hole is provided in the sealing member at the same time as the moulding thereof.
A metal insert (14) is provided to increase the mechanical strength of the area in which the windscreen wiper (12) and the respective electric motor (15) has to be applied.
The hole (18) for the windscreen cleaning nozzle (17) is positioned within the sealing member (2).
It is self evident from the above how a considerable decrease of cost can be achieved by obtaining a plurality of auxiliary systems on only one moulding operation.
