Abstract

A metal e.g. a mild steel plate or high carbon steel wire is dipped in a flux solution prior to hot dipping in aluminium, the flux comprising ammonium fluoride or a compound thereof, potassium fluoride, and a water soluble metal chloride, e.g. potassium, sodium or titanium. The flux compositions may be per cent by weight:- (1) NH4HF2 25 to 60, KF 23 to 45, and KCl 5 to 35 (2) NH4F 30 to 60, KF 23 to 45, and KCl 5 to 35 (3) (NH4)2SiF6 30 to 60, KF 28 to 50, and KCl 35 or less (4) NH4HF2 25 to 60, KF 35 to 50, and TiCl 5 to 32. In composition (4) NH4HF2 may be replaced by NH4F or (NH4)2SiF6.
