[Also in Division F2] The head 4 of a gyratory crusher rests on a hollow piston 25 containing a gaseous pressure medium and slidable in a hydraulic cylinder 24 located in the bore of a spindle 14, the piston 25 being closed at the bottom, to form a compartment 26, by a piston 28 below which is a non-return valve 29 secured to the piston 25, the space 38 below the valve being in communication with a pipe 39 secured to a liquid-pressure pump 40 in turn connected by a pipe 41 to a reservoir 42. In addition, the pipe 39 is connected through a cut-off valve 43 and pipe 44 to the reservoir 42. The valve comprises a spring- influenced seat 32 and a passage 35 adjustable by a set screw 36. The piston 28 may be replaced by a bladder filled with gaseous pressure medium. When an uncrushable body enters the crushing gap, the piston 28 and valve 29 are caused to move downwards and pressure liquid enters the valve and presses against the piston 28. As a result, the piston 28 moves upwards compressing the gaseous medium in the piston comparment 26. After the cause of overloading is removed, the pressure of the medium in the compartment 26 pushes the piston 25 upwards to its initial position. In the course of this, the pressure liquid forced into the space between the piston 28 and the valve 29 flows back into the compartment 38 until the piston 25 and hence the head 4 have been urged back into their initial positions. If it is desired to alter the width of the crushing gap, pressure liquid is supplied to or withdrawn from the compartment 38.
