Abstract
1401422 Stress limiting devices BROWN BROS & CO Ltd 10 Aug 1972 [12 May 1971] 14584/71 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] To limit stress in a towing cable 4 for a ship, a pulley 3 carrying the cable is secured to the piston-rod 2 of an hydraulic piston-cylinder shock absorber. On build-up by the load on the cable of a predetermined pressure in the cylinder, an adjustable pressure relief valve 6 opens to exhaust liquid, e.g. to a reservoir 8, allowing the piston-rod to move into the cylinder 1 and relieve the load on the cable. The cylinder is also in permanent communication with a gas pressurized liquid chamber which is located either in a separate bottle attached by line to the cylinder (not shown) or (as shown) in the hollow piston-rod. There may be a pump (not shown) to pump liquid from the reservoir 8 back into the cylinder so as to reset the shock absorber. Alternatively the cylinder may be connected to an external supply of liquid under pressure. The pressure at which the relief valve 6 will open is set by adjusting a valve 7. The cylinder 1 is fast with a bolster 10 which is fast with the ship's frame and has eyes 11 for passage of the cable 4.
