Abstract
1482604 Fluid shock absorbers for towing lines BROWN BROS & CO Ltd 27 July 1974 33304/74 Heading F2S A fluid shock absorber for absorbing shocks in a towing cable comprises a cylinder 1, a piston 2 slidable in the cylinder and dividing it into two chambers 1A and 1B closed from each other, a piston rod 3 connected to the piston 2, extending from the cylinder and carrying a hook (not shown) or pulley 4 for connection of the towing cable, at least one accumulator 5 external to, and fixed relative to, the cylinder and containing a free piston 6 dividing it into two chambers 5A and 5B, and a fluid transfer path 7 between a chamber of the cylinder and a chamber of the accumulator, the path being permanently open but offering a greater resistance to flow from the cylinder to the accumulator than in the opposite direction, i.e. the working stroke is more heavily damped than the return stroke. The working stroke may correspond (as shown) to an extension of the piston-cylinder unit, or a contraction (not shown). The chambers 1B and 5B contain gas. The fluid transfer path 7 may (as shown) be two passages connected in parallel, one passage containing a one-way valve 9 which is biased open and whose closing pressure can be adjusted, and the other containing an adjustable fluid restiction 8. Alternatively (not shown) the fluid transfer path has a pressure responsive valve which is permanently open but has two settings one of which provides a greater resistance than the other. This valve too is biased to its position of greater flow area.
