Abstract

1,023,224. Coating with metals; powder metallurgy. HEAD, WRIGHTSON & CO. Ltd. Jan. 17, 1964 [Jan. 17, 1963], No. 2184/63. Headings C7D and C7F. Metal powders such as aluminium, stainless steel, nickel and magnesium are electrostatically charged by spraying through an electrostatic spray gun on to a wetted metal surface e.g. steel to form a metal coating. As shown in Fig. 1, steel strip is passed through an alkaline degreasing liquid, rinsed in cold water, passed through a solution containing 2¢ % HCl, rinsed in cold water and finally wetted in cold water containing ¢% of a dispersing agent such as. "Lissapol" (Trade Mark). Surplus liquid is removed by squeegee rolls and in coating chamber 7 the strip is sprayed with atomized aluminium powder (250 mesh to dust) at 90,000 volts. Nitrogen is used as the conveying gas and the coating is effected in an inert atmosphere: The coated strip is dried at 8, rolled at 10 and heated to 500 ‹C. at 11. Alternatively the strip may be wetted by spraying and the wetting agent may also be ethyl or methyl alcohol.
