Abstract

1,258,262. Producing cermets. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. June 18, 1969 [June 10, 1968], No.27528/68. Heading C7D. A cermet is produced by simultaneously spraying metal and ceramic on to a surface to form a coating, removing the coating and then heat-testing it. Deposition may be effected on to a steel sheet wrapped around a cylindrical mandrel, the assembly being rotated as a plasma spray gun (or flame or arc gun) is traversed back and forth parallel to the axis of the mandrel. Heat treatment may take the form of grinding the removed coating to form powder and then sintering; or hot-pressing. The metal and ceramic components of the cermet may be Al, Ni and Cu; and alumina, zirconia and chromic oxide, respectively. The specific example is 65% Al-35% Al 2 O 3 .
