Abstract
1,203,473. Coating steel with sintered aluminium; electrolytically coating with iron. JOHN SUMMERS & SONS Ltd. March 25, 1969 [April 11, 1968], No. 17533/68. Headings C7B and C7D. A steel substrate such as strip is coated with a first layer of metal e. g. Fe and then with Al powder. The coated steel is compacted as by rolling and then heated to sinter the Al. The Fe layer is applied either electrolytically or as an electrostatically charged powder. The Al powder may also be applied in an electrostatically charged condition. The cleaned steel strip may be coated with a solution of sodium or potassium silicate prior to coating with the Fe and prior to rolling the coated strip a coating of sodium carboxy methyl cellulose is applied to the Al. The compacted strip is coiled and sintered in air at 450‹- 575‹C. for 15-20 hours. The Fe is deposited electrolytically from an aqueus solution of ferrous chloride or ferrous sulphate e.g. waste pickle liquor neutralized with excess Fe at a current up to 500 amps/sq. ft.
