In an air or other fluid heater having an outer casing 2 with a pair of parallel side walls 3, a cylindrical combustion chamber 4 is disposed between and spaced from a pair of exhaust flues 5, each flue having an arcuate inner wall 10, coaxial with the combustion chamber 4, and an outer wall 11 substantially parallel to and spaced inwards from a respective one of the casing side walls 3. Some of the fluid to be heated flows transversely over the combustion chamber 4 in the space 6 between the combustion chamber and the arcuate inner walls 10 of the flues and the remainder flows transversely over the flues in the passages 13 formed between the casing walls 3 and outer flue walls 11. The space 6 is provided with an inlet 7 and an outlet 8 on opposite sides of the combustion chamber. Each flue 5 is provided internally with vertically-spaced horizontal sheet-metal partitions 20 forming connected passages 5a and 5b. The outer wall 11 of each flue is provided with a cleaning access aperture 23 and a removable cover over each aperture. The end wall of each passage 5a is also provided with a covered cleaning access aperture. The conbustion chamber 4 is provided, at one end, with a liquid-fuel burner, the combustion gases from which pass through the chamber to the passages 5a, and return through the passages 5b to an exhaust outlet. In the air heater described, the air to be heated is forced through the space 6 and passages 13 by a fan (not shown) in a housing 18 below the chamber 4, and the heated air is taken off at a duct 19.
