Abstract

985,193. Air heating stoves. ACTIVAIR Ltd. July 6, 1961 [April 11, 1960], No. 12917/60. Heading F4S. An air heater, e.g. for hothouses, includes a tubular heat exchange element 17 closed at one end 19 and having end-to-end corrugations along its side walls 18, the element being a sliding fit over an open-topped combustion chamber 16 the top of which is spaced below the closed end 19 of the element 17 so that combustion gases B can pass down channels 21 formed between the corrugated walls 18 and the combustion chamber 16. A tubular shell 27 is a sliding fit over the element 17 to form with the latter a series of open-ended passages 28. An inlet pipe 14 at the base of the combustion chamber is mounted on a centrallyapertured base plate 13 carried on diagonal bars 12 welded to the walls of an open-ended casing 1. The plate 13 also supports the elemeat 17. Plugs 20 close the bottom ends of the channels 21, which open into an annular space bounded by the pipe 14, the bottom of the combustion chamber, and the plate 13, a port 22 linking this space with a flue passage 23, formed by a member 24 welded to the element 17, leading to a flue pipe 41. A potburner (not shown) is releasably suspended from the plate 13. A fan 7 draws air through-inlets 8 in the casing 1 and passes it up through the passages 28 and space 29 between the shell 27 and the easing 1, the heated air leaving the heater through opposed outlets 39 of a T-shaped head 36 provided with a deflector plate 38. Some air from the fan passes with the flames of the burner into the combustion chamber and the combustion gases are deflected by a plate 26 into the channels 21 to pass therethrough to the flue 23. The combustion chamber may have a refractory lining, and the casing 1 may be lined with aluminium foil. A viewing opening 33 with door 34 is provided for the combustion chamber. In an alternative construction, the bottom of the combustion chamber 16 is closed, and a pressure jet oil burner is spigot-mounted in the viewing opening 33.
