Abstract

1,076,677. Gas-fired space heater; chimneys. EMPIRE STOVE CO. June 22, 1965, No. 26463/65. Headings F4J, F4S, F4T and F4W. A gas-fired space heater comprises a combustion chamber 13 which is long relative to its height having a burner 30 in the lower portion 33 thereof, an outlet duet 16 for the products of combustion, a combustion air inlet duet 17, concentric with the outlet duct 16, communi. cating with the combustion chamber through a duct 18 connected to a plurality of longitudinally spaced locations 69 (see also Fig. 5, not shown), along the length thereof and a chamber 15, defined by a casing 14 having inlet and outlet louvres 22, 20, around and sealed from the combustion chamber 13 for heating room air. Said chamber 15 is heat-insulated from duct 18 by means of a fibregass pad 72 backed with a thin reflecting foil 73 to reflect heat from the combustion chamber 13 towards the front panel 21 of the heater. The combustion chamber, which has a removable door 49 for access to the burner 13, comprises a lower portion 33 connected to an intermediate portion 34 of triangular crosssection the area of which increases from the centre of the heater towards its ends (see Figs. 3 and 5, not shown). The intermediate portion 34 is connected in turn through a reduced area (36) comprising spaced slots (38) and engaged portions (37), (Figs. 3 and 5, not shown), to an upper portion 35 of square cross-section which increases in area from the ends to the centre of the heater. A deflection baffle 44 is fitted in the upper portion 35 to cover the lower half of the opening 43 of the outlet duct so as to assist in controlling the rate of discharge of the products of combustion. The burner 30 comprises a substantially cylindrical body 54 having two upwardlyextending walls 55, 56 with a spacer 57 therebetween to form two parallel longitudinallyextending ports 59. A gas'supply orifice (61), (Fig. 5, not shown), is controlled by a thermostat and switch (29), (60), (Fig. 3, not shown), said orifice (61) being spaced from a burner extension (62) so as to permit primary air for combustion to enter the burner 13. The inlet and outlet ducts 17, 16 pass through a wall 12 to an outside atmosphere (Fig. 6, not shown), and the annular space between the ducts is fitted with an end cap (75) spaced from the wall thus permitting inlet air to be admitted through perforations. (76). An outwardly dished outer cap (77) and an annular intermediate cap (80) is supported from the end cap (75) by brackets (78) to provide passages for the discharge of the products of combustion. An alternative embodiment, (Fig. 8, not shown), is described in which room air is used as the combustion air. The products of combustion being discharged up a flue (16A) situated in a partition wall (100), said duct is provided with a down-draft duct 102 and a baffle (103) to protect the burner flame from down drafts.
