Abstract
1,018,093. Surgical dressings. MOLNLYCKE A. B. Oct. 22, 1962 [Oct. 24, 1961], No. 39958/62. Heading A5R. A surgical compress is made by disposing an absorbent pad, e.g. disintegrated cellulose or cellulose sheets, between a thermoplastic film, e.g. polyethylene, and a liquid-permeable layer, e.g. gauze, the film being covered with a fibrous web, e.g. wet-strength paper, folding the edges of the film and web over the edges of the permeable layer to enclose the pad and treating with heat so that the film joins the fibrous web to the permeable layer. The permeable layer may be covered with a thermoplastic film layer which becomes perforated by the fibres present during the heat treatment. To assemble the compress, absorbent pads 3a, 3b, 3c are fed at regular intervals from a table 7 on to continuous superimposed webs of wet strength paper and plastic film which are drawn from rolls 11, 9. The pads are covered by a continuous gauze web drawn from a roll 15. The superimposed components are passed through a folding device 18, which turns the edges of the paper and film webs over the gauze, and then through heated pressure rolls 16, 17 which secure the folded edges to the gauze and form depressions 20 between the pads.
