In a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism for a motor vehicle, the rack 3 is formed on a member 1 having one end pivotally connected to the vehicle by a link 7 and the other end slidable in a bearing 5 which includes a spring-loaded bearing element 37 having a part-cylindrical surface making line contact only with the member 1 so as to permit the member to rock with the link 7 as the member slides through the bearing. Rods 17, 19 and ball joints 21, 23, 25, 27 link the member 1 to steering arms 29, 31 connected to the steerable wheels 33, 35. The rack 3 is protected by a gaiter 43 and meshes with a pinion 13 on a steering shaft 15.
