Abstract

596,268. Steering mechanism. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd., and BRIGGS, W. H. July 25, 1945, Nos. 19085 and 31523. [Classes 80(i) and 80(iii)] A vehicle steering gear consists of a screw d operable by the driver, a nut c of cylindrical form slidable in a housing a, a spindle f adapted to transmit motion to the steerable road wheels and having an arm h with a peg or pegs p engaging transverse notches in the nut, and a key q in the housing engaging a longitudinal groove n in the nut. As shown, the nut c has on its exterior two transverse notches m and the arm h carries two pegs p engaging these notches. The pegs are of truncated conical shape, the sides of the notches being correspondingly formed. Slackness between the pegs and notches may be taken up by an adjustable thrust member u. In a modification with a single peg p and notch m the latter is curved so that in all positions of the arm h the operative side of the notch presses on the peg p in a direction substantially at right angles so that the turning effort is uniform. The key which holds the nut c against rotation consists of a ball held in engagement with the longitudinal groove n by a ring of balls r.
