Abstract

580,422. Motor - vehicle steering gear. VIAZEMSKY, S. V. CONSTANTINOVITCH, PRINCE. March 24, 1944, Nos. 5528 and 7451. [Class 79 (v)] In a road vehicle in which the front wheels are steered and the back wheels may also be steered independently, one pair of wheels is steered by rotation of a steering wheel in the normal way, whilst the other pair is steered by slewing the steering column from side to side. Means may be provided for locking the steering column to prevent side to side movement. In Fig. 1, normal rotation of the steering wheel 17 steers the front wheels via worm wheel and rack 24, 25, rod 29, crank 32 and steering arm 39. By slewing the steering column from side to side, the vertical tubular member 19 rotates in ball bearings 20, 22, and worm wheel 43 actuates rack 44, crank 46, rod 47 and steering arm 50. Fig. 2 shows a form of clamp suitable for locking the steering column in its central position; fixed to the dash-board 13 is a bracket 54 to which is hinged a V-shaped collar 56, and which in its lowermost position embraces a sleeve 52<1> rotatably mounted on the steering column 16 In its uppermost position the collar is clear of the steering column. The collar is held in a raised or a lowered position by spring-loaded plungers 59 pivoted at 57 and 60. The invention may be applied to vehicles having more than four wheels and to articulated vehicle and tractortrailer combinations.
