Abstract

1,006,279. Centrifugal compressors. F. J. GORMAN. Oct. 3, 1963 [Oct. 25, l962], No. 39027/63. Heading F1C. In a multi-stage centrifugal compressor having impellers 4, 5, 6 each provided with a porous intake disc 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> and an adjacent impervious disc 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>11</SP> to move fluid axially through the porous disc and radially outwardly between the discs, the casing has an inlet at one end, an outlet 13 at the other, and a portion surrounding the impellers in the shape of a bellows. The bellows portion comprises frustoconical diverging sections 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP> and frusto-conical converging sections 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, which direct the fluid to the adjacent downstream impeller and thereby provide an axial flow of fluid in increasing pressure stages. The casing may be reinforced by an outer tube 14. The impeller discs are of flexible material thereby permitting removal of the casing for replacement of the porous discs.
