Abstract

1,001,904. Magnetrons; transformers. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 3, 1962 [Aug. 14, 1961], No. 29845/62. Headings H1D and H1T. [Also in Divisions H3, H4 and H5]. A magnetron microwave generator 28, Fig. 1, for a microwave oven is housed along with the magnetron field coils 50, 52 and, optionally, other associated supply circuit components, including an auto-transformer 38, within a single casing 14 mounted externally of the oven wall 24; the casing 14 is of magnetic material and provides a magnetic yoke for the magnetron coils 50, 52. The curved extensions 106, 108, Fig. 3, on the polepieces 102, 104 are insulated from the casing by insulating spacers 110, 112. The magnetron which is of the radial vane type with ring straps 88, 90 has a beryllium oxide envelope 76 with conductive end caps 72, 74 between which the cathode helix 92 is secured by screws 94, 96. The casing is filled with oil for cooling and includes a bellows for taking up expansion of the oil. The unit also includes an electromagnetic vibrator 124, Fig. 1, coupled to the magnetron magnetic structure for vibrating the microwave coupler 128 extending into the oven aperture. The magnetron field coils also serve as smoothing chokes in the magnetron power supply circuit. In another embodiment the auto-transformer has a D- shaped magnetic core, the linear limb of the D extending diametrically across the casing 14.
