Abstract
1,061,711. Magnetrons. S-F-D LABORATORIES Inc. Aug. 9, 1963 [Aug. 10, 1962 (2); Aug. 27, 1962; Sept. 6, 1962; Sept. 13, 1962], No. 31643/63. HeadingHlD. In an inverted magnetron with the cathode 9 surrounding an array of cavity resonators formed by anodes vanes 6 and with alternate resonators communicating through slots 7 with a central cavity resonator, waveguide or coaxial line supporting a circular electric mode, coupling to the output waveguide 2 is via an annular slot formed between the circular plate 13 and the surrounding anode wall in order to suppress more heavily loaded non- circular modes..The plate 13 may be replaced by a star- or snowflakeshaped plate, Fig. 6 (not shown), which is secured to the anode wall at its tips. Desirable coupling is enhanced by notches in the sides of the plate. The plate 13 is supported ,by a rod 14 which is axially slidable within a sleeve ,22 and sapphire ring bearings 23 so that the plate 13 serves also as a tuner. An annular slot mode absorber 24 consisting of a carbon-impregnated alumina ceramic is carried by the free end of the anode wall and, in order to eliminate unwanted radiation from the anode slots, annular conductive bands are provided to cover the ends of the slots, preferably on the vane side of the anode wall. These bands are secured to the anode wall through highly resistive electrical contacts. The anode wall is fixed to the tube envelope 1 only at the end remote from the slot mode absorber 24 so as to permit unrestrained axial movement at the free end. In another embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), the anode structure is carried from an insulator (52) by a shaft (55) supported by a transverse header (54). The cathode 9 is supported by spring fingers from three equally spaced stand-off insulators 72. The cathode heater (63), Fig. 14 (not shown), is in the form of a helix and supported within an enlarged cathode body portion (61) by a plurality of longitudinal insulator blocks (64) or insulated wires, Figs. 16, 17 (not shown). The cathode 9 is surrounded by a combined cathode end hat and heat shield assembly (67), Fig. 14 (not shown), composed of annular overlapping plates. Cathode end hats may be omitted and their function replaced by the magnetic polepieces 12.
