[Also in Divisions F2 and H2] In a fan for a furnace, the vertical shaft connecting the impeller to the electric driving motor is cooled by circulating cooling fluid through a casing which extends axially beyond the housing of a lower bearing for the shaft, the shaft having a partition separating it into two compartments for the supply and discharge of the cooling fluid and communicating with corresponding ports in the casing. In a fan for circulating air or gas in a furnace, cooling water is supplied through a port 8 to the interior of the hollow fan shaft 10 and, after passing through the whole length of the shaft interior and returning around a partition which divides the interior into two spaces, is discharged through a port 9, whereby the driving motor 2 is protected from the heat. Fresh protective gas is supplied to the furnace through a port 13, thereby cooling the upper bearing 11. A water space 12 protects the upper bearing 11 against convection heat. Cooling water leaking from casing 6 is removed by a flinger disc 14.
