Abstract
549,619. Cooling gearing. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and MERRITT, H. E. July 25, 1941, No. 9447. [Class 80 (i)] Gear units, and particularly worm gears, are cooled by a fan of radial discharge type arranged to draw air through spaces formed between parts of the gear case walls and ribs thereon and an enclosing tunnel or shroud or through passages cored in the walls. A worm gear is enclosed in a casing a, the worm b being disposed in the lower and the wheel in the upper part of the casing. A fan c, of radial discharge type, is arranged to draw air through spaces d between ribs e on the casing wall and a cowl, or shroud f. The fan is mounted on the worm shaft g and within a casing h from which it discharges over the upper part of the casing formed with guide ribs a<SP>2</SP>. In Fig. 2., the fan is double-sided, the part c<SP>1</SP> serving to draw air through an electric driving motor i or over its casing. According to the Provisional Specification, two separate fans may be used.
