Abstract
1,239,196. Centrifugal and axial-flow compressors. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. May 23, 1969 [June 3, 1968], No.26326/69. Heading F1C. In a multi-stage compressor, e.g. for aircraft engines, comprising a number of axial-flow stages 4, 6 and a centrifugal stage 12, the centrifugal rotor 14 has substantially axially-directed bleed passages 44 therein which receive some of the fluid entering the centrifugal stage and deliver it through radial passages 46 to a central chamber 42. The latter communicates through ports 40 with a second chamber 38, the fluid from both chambers being used, e.g. to cool a turbine driving the compressor. The rotor 14 may be formed by two discs 14a, 14b, the radial passages 46 being formed in one or both of the mating surfaces of the discs.
