Abstract

1,000,943. Double sash windows; double glazing. WILLIAMS & WILLIAMS Ltd. Feb. 14, 1962 [Dec. 14, 1960; April 12, 1961], Nos. 43121/60 and 13188/61. Headings E1J and E1R. [Also in Division F4] A fitting for mounting on a single sash window to convert it into a double sash window or for mounting a fly screen &c, comprises a subsidary frame 4 which may be pivoted to the fixed window frame or detachably mounted thereon, is adapted to be fitted with glass, gauze or other sheet material 10 and provided with a rubber pad or cushion 5 projecting from the face opposing the sash 2 and formed and disposed to engage an area around the sash 2 and an area around the fixed frame to form an airtight seal therewith the subsidary frame 4 being secured to the window frame 1 by means of a clamp 14-15 or screws. The pad 5 is of inverted-T-section fitting into a similarly sectioned groove 6 in the subsidary frame 4 which may be of plastic and have a vertical U-section portion 13 for engagement with the clamp 14 and a horizontal U-section portion 11 to accommodate the edge portions of a gauze sheet 10 to be secured therein by resilient rubber rods 12. The pad part 7 is hollow and seals the joint between the sash 2 and the main frame 1 and a flange 9 on the pad makes an airtight seal between the frames 1 and 4. In Fig. 2, the sheet of glass is held in the subsidary frame by a resilient member 19 lying in a groove 20 in the subsidiary frame 17. If the frame is of plastic, the pane may be secured in a channel such as 20. The outer side of channel 21 may be extended over the whole of the opposing face of the fixed frame 1 and carries a further pad adjacent its outer edge. The cross-bar portion of the slot 6 may take the form of a box the pad 5 not filling the box. A similar frame may be used for converting a single glazed sash into a double glazed sash as indicated in Fig. 6 (not shown). The subsidary frame may accommodate ventilator shutters which are pivoted to the subsidary frame and are spring controlled to open when the window sash opens.
