Abstract

1,000,432. Treating charge of I.C. engines. L. T. BARNES. Feb. 8, 1962, No. 4981/62. Heading FIB. An extra-air system for a multi-cylinder engine comprises an air addition device 40a mounted in each cylinder inlet 59, the flow of extra-air being controlled by a regulator 20 actuated by the suction in a Venturi 40 situated between the carburetter outlet and manifold inlet. The regulator 20 comprises a piston 33 operated by the difference in pressure between pipe 43 connected to the throat of Venturi 40 and pipe 45 connected to the carburetter outlet above Venturi 40, which piston operates a piston valve 34 controlling apertures 46 through which extra-air, supplied through pipe 11, flows to the devices 40a. Each Venturi 40 or 40a comprises a throat member 60 mounted in a recessed interconnector 72 which seats in a flange member 70. The throat 60 is connected through orifices 69 to a passage 81 connected to the pipes 43 or 54 and unvaporised fuel collecting in a recess 57 is drawn off through orifices 58. The orifices 46 are graduated in size and valves 90, which may be remotely controlled, are provided in the individual supply pipes 54.
