Abstract

The device applies to hydro electric drives which are normally started as a motor driven pump set. The generator is running as a motor and the turbine as a pump. The set is then normally started against a closed valve with a fully submerged pump. The set is switched to a hydroelectric generator set when the units are up to speed. The starting torque is reduced by injecting a supply of air into the pump inlet which reduces the load on the impeller. The air bubble is of such a size as to remain stable during the acceleration of the set. This air settles over the hub of the impeller so as to become most effective when the set is at 80-90% of synchronous speed.
