Abstract

The carriage (2) travelling on rollers along the horizontal arm of e.g. a tower crane, and carrying a set of pulleys for the lifting cable, by means of which the hook (16) is raised and lowered, carries a latch by means of which a central pulley (6) on the lifting block (5) can be engaged or disengaged to change the cable system from two strand to four strand. The block is lowered to the ground and a swinging arm (19) is swung from the horizontal position to an upright position, with the central pulley in the lowered position for the two strand arrangement. The block is raised until the arm (19) contacts a horizontal flap (15) on the carriage, to swing an L shaped pivot arm (10) upwards against a spring. This allows a vertical rod (7) on the central pulley to pass between a pair of guides (9) on the carriage. Then as the pulley and rod descent, the L arm can swing down, so that a cross bar (8) through the rod, comes to rest on top of the horizontal leg (10b) of the L arm and the pulley is then suspended from the carriage, in a four strand arrangement.
