Abstract
Gasket materials incorporate a porous metals structure made of >=2 layers of metal mesh which trap metal balls each slightly larger than the mesh and sintered to the mesh prior to impregnation. Pref. the mesh strands are 0.15-0.25 mm thick and the mesh apertures are 0.35-0.55 across the metal components esp. being of bronze, Ag, Ni or a Ni/Cu alloy and the resin of PTFE or of fluorinated ethylene-propylene. Esp. suitable for joints with high clamping pressures or against moving parts such as knife and its guide. The reinforcing structure is flexible to allow good surface contact while offering high compressive strength and inhibiting lateral creep of the matrix resin. The stiffness of the reinforcement can be adjusted by controlling the ratio of mesh cells loaded with balls.
