<PICT:0821472/III/1> <PICT:0821472/III/2> <PICT:0821472/III/3> <PICT:0821472/III/4> A bearing comprises a perforated metal sheet 10 coated with a plurality of layers of polytetrafluoroethylene by dipping, spraying, doctoring or calendering. The first layer of P.T.F.E. fills the interstices 12. The sheet may be bonded to a backing-plate 16 by means of a weld 18. In a modification, a metallic wire mesh comprising wires 20, 22 of phosphor bronze, stainless steel, or silver is coated with two layers of P.T.F.E. 24, Fig. 4. The sheet is bonded to a metallic backing-plate 26 by a solder 25. After initial wear the resulting surface comprises a network of metal and plastic as shown in Fig. 5. Dry lubricants, e.g. molybdenum disulphide, may be added to the plastic coating material.
