Abstract

A textile roller (e.g. a calender roll or presser roll of a papermaking or laminating machine) includes an outer cylindrical shell and an inner core element between which is a filling of elastomeric material (e.g. natural rubber, neoprene, urethane, butadiene-styrene) having gas bubbles uniformly dispersed in it. Pref. the core element includes a cylindrical central portion and frustoconical outer portions whereby the thickness of the elastomeric material increases towards the ends of the rollers, and pref. the gas bubbles constitute 10-20% of the volume of the elastomeric material. An adhesive (e.g. epoxy or phenolic) may be used to bond the elastomeric material to the shell and core element and the gas bubbles may be produced by a foaming agent (e.g. sulphonyl hydrazide, azobisformide). The dispersion of gas bubbles allows the elastomeric material to contract and dilate under mechanical or thermal forces without the risk of rupturing, thereby increasing the working life of the roller.
