Abstract

Stretchable crepe paper is produced on a machine including a pair of rotatably driven rolls between which a paper web is gripped in a manner to perform lengthwise compression of the web, one of the rolls being the form of an inflatable tube that is deformed in operation and which rotates more slowly than a co-operating roll formed of hard rigid material. The paper web is preferably wet during treatment and is not appreciably stretched when it enters the roller nip. A construction of roller that has means for maintaining air pressure constant within it and, if desired, cooling it is described (see Division F2).
