Abstract

1,034,127. Paper-making apparatus. KARLSTADS MEKANISKA WERKSTAD. A. B. April 26, 1963 [Sept. 3, 1962], No.16431/63. Heading D2A. A calender stack has a pressure mechanism arranged for yieldably exerting a pressure over the entire length of the top roll 15 to cause an even pressure between roll 15 and roll 13 higher than the pressure produced by the weight of roll 15 on roll 13. As shown the stack comprises a solid steel roll 11 in fixed bearings, a solid steel roll 13 and a hollow top roll 15 on vertical swingable arms 17, 19. Any uneveness in the paper web is absorbed by the resilent roll 15, by pressure rolls 25, 27, 29 which may be covered with elastic material and are downwardly pressed by pressure fluid or by springs, and possibly by providing every second calender roll with an elastic layer between a thin peripheral shell and the steel core. In another example, beam 23 supporting pressure boxes 35 is mounted within roller 15 and is connected by pneumatic pressure boxes to frame 21. In a further example (Fig. 6. not shown), the pressure mechanism comprises a pressure chamber having flexible sealing lips and mounted over roller 15.
