990, 749. Washing and impregnating webs. C. A. MEIER-WINDHORST. Feb. 27, 1962 [Feb. 27, 1961], No. 7532/62. Heading D1L. Material 12 and particularly material in web form is washed and/or impregnated beneath the surface of a liquid 13 by a treating roller 11 having a surface 10 of resilient non-permeable material with a plurality of recesses therein so that in use, as the surface portion is compressed, liquid in the recesses is forced outwards into contact with the material 12. In Fig. 4 the material 12 compresses the soft roller layer 10 by its own tension whereas in further forms the material passes between a covered roller 11 and a rigid, preferably perforated, roller or between a pair of covered rollers. In Fig. 7 the material 12 passes between a succession of co-operating covered rollers 11, guide rollers 16 being provided to intermittently lift the material. The resilient layer 10 may consist of a material having closed cells therein and be provided with peripherally arranged radially directed pockets or recesses open to the surface; soft resilient material without such cells may alternatively be used. The layer 10 may be of rubber. Specific examples are given of washing and impregnating a web.
