Abstract

Liquid cyclic hydrocarbons containing not more than 5 per cent by weight of glycols are separated therefrom by selective adsorption of the glycols on natural or regenerated cellulose. Typical hydrocarbons are tetra- or deca-hydronaphthalene, diphenyl and a - or b -methyl naphthalene which may contain ethylene glycol. The cellulose preferably has a large surface area and may be in the form of filter paper rings, balls, cellulose wadding, voluminous tablets or viscose sponge. Viscose sponge is preferably dried to a water content of less than 4 per cent by weight, e.g. by treating with a 5-10 per cent by weight aqueous solution of glycol or glycerine to prevent hardening, wringing out and drying in air spread out on frames for about two days. The adsorped glycols may be recovered by squeezing out, extracting with water or methanol or by distillation under normal or reduced pressure. A continuous process is illustrated employing an endless belt of viscose sponge from which the glycols are recovered by passing the belt between rollers. The examples illustrate the separation of ethylene glycol from tetrahydronaphthalene.
