Abstract

Steel especially suitable for the manufacture of transformers because of low heat losses is produced by treatment with SiCl4 in the gas phase at 1038-1260 degrees C of a steel containing less than 3.5% Si to increase the Si content to about 6%. An apparatus suitable for this process comprises means for transporting a steel strip or band; a chamber in which the steel is preheated to 1038 degrees C in an inert gas; a chamber in which the steel is contacted with an inert gas, 10% of which has been saturated with SiCl4 at 27 degrees C; and a cooling chamber filled with an inert gas. Gases from the treatment chamber, including gaseous FeCl3 being a by-product of this process, are passed to a condenser. By this method high-silicon steels with oriented grain structure are obtained.
