Abstract

A process for the manufacture of high-bulk textile yarns comprises passing a spun yarn containing shrinkable and relatively unshrinkable fibres under a tension less than 0.1 gram per denier through a turbulent fluid zone and also subjecting it to conditions which cause ithe shrinkable fibres to shrink. The shrinkage operation preferably takes place after the passage of the yarn through the turbulent fluid zone, and is effected by heat, e.g. steam treatment. The shrinkable fibres preferably shrink by at least 25%, advantageously at least 50%, of their length. The turbulent fluid is advantageously a cold inert gas. The yarn travels through a conduit 6 opening into a chamber 7, the compressed fluid being fed by means of a channel 9 into the chamber 7, the channel 9 meeting the chamber 7 at an acute angle with the forward direction of travel of the yarn 'so producing a turbulent fluid zone. The difference in shrinkage potential between the shrinkable and relatively unshrinkable fibres is at least 20%. In preferred embodiment, polyvinyl chloride fibres are used as the shrinkable fibres and polyacrylonitrile fibres as the unshrinkable fibres. The yarn produced has a high bulk and fluffy appearance.
