Abstract

A process for the production of detergents containing alkenesulphonates and hydroxyalkanesulphonates comprises sulphonating at least one C 8-25 [alpha]-olefin and neutralizing the product to produce an aqueous solution containing an anionically-active neutralized olefin sulphonic acid detergent and anionically inactive material insoluble in aqueous ethanol and soluble in pentane, and heating this reaction product at atmospheric pressure by contact with a heat transfer material, e.g. a hot gas or a heated surface with a temperature of at least 260 F. to raise its temperature to at least 230 F. and reduce its water content to 1-12%, this heat treatment being effective in decreasing the content of the said anionically inactive material. Builder salts may be added to the reaction product prior to the heat treatment.
